I had to stop using interactive features of the DAZN experience and could not prepare my analysis for Brasil - Morocco
When hateful racist and fascist comments ruin a digital advanced experience and what we could do about it
Last night I wanted to research the DAZN interactive element while watching FIFA World Cup 2026™ - Canada, Mexico and the United States match Brasil - Morocco, on my laptop, but had to stop after few minutes for the incredibly disturbing racist and fascist messages that the chat contained - especially against Morocco.
Also, I was watching with my son Miles 11yrs old and others.
This is not just yet another case of "we should not have fans chat", I have been involved for too long to simplify my solution to that.
Two aspects.
1. The sadly obvious acknowledgement of how these occasion highlights the worst parts of the worst people (especially if the can hide their identity, but not exclusively). Also considering there maybe legal consequences.
2. The fact that even in the age of AI these things are still happening, makes me doubt we really need fans chat - even if for years I hoped they could add value. We are back in 1999…
I am curious to see if DAZN makes some changes going forward.
My suggestion apart from removing the chat all together.
1. Are we sure DAZN is using the most advanced tool to clean the chat in real time? (no idea)
2. Can DAZN add a selection UI to just get interactive elements and other controlled experiences (maybe it was there, did not see it, I will check again tonight). We would have loved to engage with those the whole game...
3. I don't want to only talk about the platform here... What is with these people! Personal responsibility should not be diluted by troubled digital interface
4. I wanted to see if I could report users but the speed of the flow was so high that it was impossible to do that
5. DAZN has a page dedicated to this - link in the comments - with an explanation of their methodology this statement: "Our commitment
At DAZN, we are dedicated to maintaining a vibrant, safe, and inclusive environment for all sports fans. Your support and collaboration are key to making it happen."
So no analysis from me today on the FIFA World Cup fan digital engagement.
Images below:
1. How we watched on the kitchen table of my country home
2. Composition (no AI my manual terrible image stitching) of what we did not want to watch
I have some images with the hateful comments which I am not sharing to avoid promoting their intent.
and by the way - great match!
